A new date for La Florida Stela 6/ Una nueva fecha por la Estela 6 de La Florida

In 1996, Paulino Morales discovered two fragments of a stela near La Florida Structure N14-19. He identified these as part of Stela 6, which had previously been reported by Graham and others. Morales was the first to recognize that the stela had preserved carving and deposited the carved fragment in the bodega of the local town offices for safe keeping. Morales interpreted the stela fragment as containing a Calendar Round date of 12 Ajaw 8 K’ank’in, which he identifies as the Long Count date 9.14.5.0.0. When we started working at La Florida, this fragment was still in the town bodega, though it was inaccessible behind other items. In July of 2017, the fragment was made available to us for study by Auxiliary Mayor Alfredo Morales. Our investigation of the stela suggests that it actually records the Calendar Round date 12 Ajaw 8 Keh. The most likely corresponding Long Count would be 9.11.0.0.0 or 652 A.D. So far, this is the earliest known date recorded at the site. Perhaps in future seasons, we will find even earlier inscriptions.

En 1996, Paulino Morales halló dos fragmentos de una estela cerca de la Estructura N14-19 de La Florida. Identificó estos como partes de la Estela 6, que había estado reportado anteriormente por Graham y otros investigadores. Morales era el primer investigador a notar que la estela tenía una inscripción, y depositó el fragmento tallado en la bodega del alcaldía auxiliar para su seguridad. Morales creyó que la fecha correcta de la estela fuera 12 Ajaw 8 K’an’in, o 9.14.5.0.0 en el calendario Maya. Cuando nosotros empecemos el trabajo en La Florida, este fragmento todavía estaba en la bodega, pero inaccesible.
