The La Florida-Namaan Archaeology Project presents the data from our October, 2016 field season. Photos and season report are available on the data page. Particularly exciting was our discovery of La Florida Stela 16, which we call “Doña Benita.” Dating to 785, this is the latest known monument at the site, and it was discovered, to our surprise, in the Santa Marta Group on the north side of the San Pedro River. It is now housed under a protective roof in front of the military base in El Naranjo, where it can be seen and enjoyed by the public.
Hi I’m reaching out because my wife’s family owns property on the San Pedro just outside of Naranjo. I visited there back in 2008. Between her aunts and uncle’s they own a few hundred acres on both sides of the river just a couple miles away from naranjo towards Mexico. On one of the properties I saw a pyramid covered in jungle that was probably 40 to 60 feet tall. I’m not sure if they would be willing to allow permission, or how that even works, to excavate the ruins on their properties but I thought I’d try to get in touch with you first. I have pictures. Some of my wife’s family still lives there. My name is Kevin please get in touch with me if you can I think they would be interested in working with you.
